Things (for me) to learn:
- (the real) impact of self hosted instances
- hashtags seem important (discoverability)
- privacy nuances (assuming that nothing is private, not even DMs)
- threading / branches
- crossposting tools

DMs are as private as they were on Twitter, it's just that Mastodon doesn't pretend that they're as secure as encrypted messages.
@dheadshot got it! I also saw a post (toot) that indicated if you @ someone in a DM, it’s like adding them to the chat

Yup, so if you want to talk about someone behind their back, don't mention them 😉
(Generally don't talk about people behind their back though unless you're reporting trolls)
