Things (for me) to learn:
- (the real) impact of self hosted instances
- hashtags seem important (discoverability)
- privacy nuances (assuming that nothing is private, not even DMs)
- threading / branches
- crossposting tools
@dheadshot got it! I also saw a post (toot) that indicated if you @ someone in a DM, it’s like adding them to the chat
@kishau
Yup, so if you want to talk about someone behind their back, don't mention them 😉
(Generally don't talk about people behind their back though unless you're reporting trolls)
@dheadshot yes 😂 I agree with the general rule to not say anything that you wouldn’t want everyone to read/hear
@kishau
Hashtags are the only way to search for posts, to prevent trolls from piling on people who criticise their favourite celebrity, for instance.
The web interface doesn't thread replies, but some apps do.
Crossposting - though common among newbies - is discouraged, as people end up not paying attention to here.
@kishau
DMs are as private as they were on Twitter, it's just that Mastodon doesn't pretend that they're as secure as encrypted messages.
